You can buy traveler cheques from the following institutions:

   State Bank of India
   Thomas cook
   Cox and Kings
   Centrum
   FRR ForEx

In addition, American Express has not launched a traveler's card (foreign currency) as yet in India.

Hi,

+1.

I thought it's only Thomas Cook and Cox & Kings.

Hey Bro,

I just spoke to someone in American Express Traveler Cheques - Sales and got the following information from them.

You can buy traveler cheques from the following institutions:

   State Bank of India
   Thomas cook
   Cox and Kings
   Centrum
   FRR ForEx

In addition, American Express has not launched a traveler's card (foreign currency) as yet in India. So, whatever card the bank is offering you, you will have to get the information from them regarding withdrawing money from it along with any fees that's applicable.

I hope this information helps!!!

Let me know if you need to know anything else regarding American Express Traveler Cheques.

Hi,

1. AmEx Traveler Cards are now available with Thomas Cook, India (I am not sure about others). It's highly recommended for Indian students.

: You can use this card at any VISA ATM to withdraw cash (with some charges).
: It can be "swiped" at any merchant/to pay school fee's/to pay bills etc. (With NO extra charges).
: You can reload/or ask your family to reload this card from any Thomas Cook branch in India. At least you can save $ 25 to 40 per transaction + lot of paper work/proof with an expensive banking wire transfer (India)

*based on my personal experience + limited knowledge.

2. Avoid using ICICI Bank Travel Card (it's just like a AmEx Traveler Card). Reasons: First, they want you to open a bank account with minimum balance of Rs. 10,000 (and, you must maintain this minimum balance all the time). Second, forget about getting a competitive foreign exchange rates, it's expensive.
