Does anyone know if it's possible to cross into Canada from a visa exempt country like the US once you have the permanent resident visa in your passport, but aren't ready to land yet?

We want to come into Canada for a week or so to find a place to live, driving our car with US plates, then once we have an address, go back to the border and do the landing procedure.

Is this possible?
