I have read that in order to apply for a common law visa you are required to live together for 12 consecutive months
Quote
you have been living together in a conjugal relationship for at least one year in a continuous 12-month period that was not interrupted. (You are allowed short absences for business travel or family reasons, however.)
This is from the cic.gc.ca website.

I am currently on a two year working visa living with my boyfriend in the UK. I would like to go home for 4 weeks in January to visit. Is that considered a short absence? I couldn't find anything that defines what a short absence is. Thanks.

IMO that will be fine, you will still be keeping lease/job in the UK I assume, and going to visit family is a legitimate reason. Plus you will be there for 2 years so I think you'll be ok.

Yes, I agree, as long as you can show that you are just "visiting" at home and that your address remains in the UK, you should be fine. And 4 weeks is not too long, just make it clear that it is a "short" visit, and you should be fine.
