My Stepson is in Canada on a WX-1 Visa and has a desire to become involved in the trucking industry. He has an International Drivers which allows him to drive a commercial vehicle in Europe rated at 7000 kg on a single unit. Is it possible for him to get a acquire a class 1 license in Alberta without a social insurance number so that he will be more likely to find a sponsor

He should go to a registry and ask if he can get a drivers license.  However, I believe that you must be legally living in AB to be able to get a drivers license.  If he were on a student visa or workers visa, he would be able to use his foreign license and a translation of it, either to exchange for an Alberta license or take a test to get an Alberta license.

Another option would be if he can go do his license in Ontario as you do not need status in Ontario to get a license.  Not sure if that just goes for a regular license though or also for class 1.
