1) I applied for a visa this year. Can I apply for a Multiple entry visa in the same year?
2) If I stay for the given duration of the Multiple entry visa and then leave for Canada month, can I return to visit? Or do I need to wait a certain amount of time, i.e. are there allotted limits per year?

1. Yes, if the single entry visa has already been used or it has expired.
2. You can only stay as long as the CBSA officer at the port of entry allows. The default period is 6 months. The visa has nothing to do with how long you can stay, just when you must enter by. So if you have a multiple entry visa valid for 2 years, that doesn't mean you can stay as a visitor for 2 years. The multiple entry visa means that you can leave and re-enter Canada multiple times during the validity of the visa (as long as CBSA doesn't think you will overstay). This is the difference between a visa and a permit. The visa lets you enter Canada, the permit says what you can do when you get here and how long you can stay. Most visitors don't get a permit (visitor record) upon entry unless they ask for it or CBSA issues it for whatever reason. The CBSA stamp upon entry is your permit and as mentioned before, the maximum default period for a visit is 6 months unless otherwise indicated by CBSA.
