CANADIAN IMMIGRATION NEWS

Citizenship and Immigration Canada to Hire 160 Employees

The CIC Sydney Processing Centre is looking to fill up to 160 staff positions until 2011 after it eliminated 147 jobs due to federal funding cuts in March. These changes came into effect after a rally held against the decision to end these jobs in downtown core of Sydney.

Union officials and Government critics, although welcoming of the initiative, are pushing for these jobs to be held permanently as the centre handles thousands of applications each week for Citizenship and Permanent Residency Cards. The additional staff members will be needed to meet the demands of the large amount of Canadian Immigration Applications that come on a regular basis.

"CIC has reallocated funding to hire up to 160 new employees for the citizenship operations, the permanent resident card centre and the centralized intake office at CPC Sydney" stated spokeswoman for Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Karen Shadd. Although these jobs are welcomed by the community and critics alike, Victoria MP Mark Eyking stressed that the uncertainty of employment within CIC offices may lead to other bigger problems including the loss of skilled workers to other countries.
