Dear friends,

Many of us, who have received and complied with instructions for medicals and RPRF, must be anxiously waiting for the PPR. We also have to start preparing ourselves for our departure and "things to do" on/after arrival. Some of the points I have been thinking of are:

1-Transfer of/carrying funds to Canada - Do we need Income Tax department's permission? What is the best route - wire transfer, bank draft, cash etc.?
2-Health Insurance - Do we need to buy a health insurance for 3-6 months before departing from our county? If yes, what should be the insurance value? Can we buy it from the companies in our respective countries?
3-Immunization - Do we need any immunization? Especially before deaprting from India?
4-Goods to follow - What form is to be completed? Can we include details of property to be sold? How much time is allowed to bring "goods to follow"?
5-Landing in Canada - What are the points to remember and forms to be completed?
6-After landing - SIN, application for PR? any other point?
7-House search - tips
8-Mobile/Internet connection - tips
9-Job serach - Tips for Canadian Resume, placement agencies, settlement assistance etc.

Seniors - Your valuable help and guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi CB - thanks for your guidance. Can I buy health insurance from Birla Sunlife or ICICI Lombart which have Canadian partnerships? Where are you located? Have you found a job in in your prefession? Any tips on Canadian Resume and job search will also be appreciated.

Best wishes,
vermas

Cool!! weather will start getting better in April. What is your intended destination in Canada. I was in Toronto for two years to do one year PG and one PG work permit. Returned to Delhi (Vasant Kunj) in June 2010, leaving my file in process in Buffalo VO. Where do you live?

Can I buy health insurance from Birla Sunlife or ICICI Lombart which have Canadian partnerships?
Is there a time limit that you must stay in Canada after landing?

Cheers..

This is in response 2 ur PM...

1- Transfer of/carrying funds to Canada - Do we need Income Tax department's permission? What is the best route - wire transfer, bank draft, cash etc.?
Our monies [that enter Canada] r never taxed. It's only the income that it'd generate [viz. bank interests, capital gains, return on investments etc.] which could attract tax. We do not require to pre-intimate anyone. Any money that enters Canada is automatically notified [by the bank] to FINTRAC [this is an anti money-laundering measure -- not for taxation]

The best way of carrying our settlement funds is the 80:20 ratio. Viz. 80% in draft/s while 20% in cash. As 'CB' rightly informed - u could 'wire-transfer' ur subsequent transactions from abroad... it's instantly credited... there's a charge of $25-50 depending on the amount and regularity of fund movement [and also by the type of bank a/c that u maintain here]... they charge me a meagre $12 everytime [which is every month].

2- Health Insurance - Do we need to buy a health insurance for 3-6 months before departing from our county? If yes, what should be the insurance value? Can we buy it from the companies in our respective countries?
Pls read: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t39920.0.html

3- Immunization - Do we need any immunization? Especially before deaprting from India?
Pls read: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t61790.0.html

4- Goods to follow - What form is to be completed? Can we include details of property to be sold? How much time is allowed to bring "goods to follow"?
The forms B4 r for 'goods', not for 'funds'. Thus, u can't add properties. Besides, as detailed in point-1, u don't need to inform anyone about ur fund transfers. So, the money generated by ur property sale is just pure money -- send it to Canada as mentioned in the said point.

Once ur B4 is stamped ['only' during ur 1st entry here] u can bring those 'listed' goods as long as u deem fit/desire... there's no time-limit. More details here:
http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t44793.0.html

5- Landing in Canada - What are the points to remember and forms to be completed?
Pls read: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t36735.0.html

6- After landing - SIN, application for PR? any other point?
SIN Card [1st things 1st] - the No. is given 2 u on-the-spot @ Service Canada... the Card comes later [usually a week to 10 days]. U don't need the card for anything, except on employment, the No. suffices for each & every financial task. Note: the SIN is 'only' required for Fin. Tasks, nowhere else. And do not divulge it to anyone.

Bank a/c: Ur next task. Open it the same day as u get ur SIN [usually the day of landing, if time permits, or the very next day]. U need the SIN# here - not the Card; and a residential address [ur temp. accommodation's will suffice -- however update the bank ur permanent one the moment u obtain a lease/purchase; AND keep them updated on ur every move.

PR cards: It's done online by the BSO @ POE on ur 'landing', automatically. U receive the PR cards in 45-60 days. Till then a copy of ur COPR should be 'on person' - that suffices everywhere where a PR Card is required.

Health Card: In Alberta & Manitoba - do it the day u open ur bank a/c. U r covered in these 2 provinces from day-1 of ur landing. For all other provinces there's a wait period. In Ontario u could do it 'only' after 90 days of establishing ur home here. Many'd suggest to apply for it asap & let the OHIP commence the day u complete 90 days -- however, it is wrong. Firstly, some Health Canada offices might not accept ur OHIP apps b4 90 days. Secondly, even if they do - it makes no difference, 'coz if u go there on the day u have 90 days of residence - u get the coverage imdtly, as u submit ur apps... same time/same day. I did it likewise. U get ur OHIP No. then-n-there, which suffices for ur visitation to any clinic. The OHIP card arrives by 7-10 days... it'd anyway take that long [7-10 days from the 90th day] even if u get to apply for it earlier.

Driving License: Go for it within a week's-to-10days practice. If u have the 'authentication Letter' depicting over 24 month's of overseas driving exp - u could receive ur 'G' license imdtly [of course as u get ur road-test appt & if u pass it]. Else, it's achievable in 3-4 weeks by going thru the G1 & G2 road tests once more... 'coz u have a wait-time 'waiver'... it's only thus a matter of getting the appts.

Kids School: Pls read: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t72241.0.html

7- House search - tips
Local Bulletin Boards r ur awesome/all important source. Kijiji & Craigslist help as well [but it'd be tad difficult 'coz u'd not understand where to search [locality wise]. Ur local Grocer, Barber-shop & Driving Instructor r also ur good sources.
