I don't think that is the difference since I have a file number starting with F and that letter was sent in October of 2011 (my file was transfered in Aug, 2011).

The sponsor gets a file  number that starts with Fxxxxxx from Mississauga
and the principal applicant/person being sponsored gets a file number Bxxxx after the file is transfered to CHC-I.

You have to email CHc-I to get the file number that starts with BXXXX,  this number can be requested after the file has been transfered to Islamabad for 3 months

From what I've read, it does not mean anything. You can have a B file or F file OR both BnF.. Immigration stuff.

We received AOR letter with F file number, and I use it to check my wife's status online. Never got B. As long as you can check the status with the file number provided, your good IMO..

You are right -- but the question was the differenece between them     -- I got Fxxx from Sauga and Bxxxxx from ISlamabad ---- you can use either number to check your status ----

No they are different unique Numbers B123456   F654321  -- I can login using both

The BXXXXX that comes like i said is for the principal applicant -- but you can also use Fxxx if you dont have Bxxxxxx

I dont know about benefit but u get an idea if they have looked at your file or not -- so if you get a Bxxxx number from them it really doesnt mean that the initial review is done( meaning that they have looked at your file) -- but then Also some people got their PPR in 10 months, so there could be a slight chance --- once you have the BXXX number, after a few months you can order CAIPES or GCMS notes to find out what is going on with your file
