The European Union has expressed concerns over “systematic deficiency” in PIA aircraft maintenance following detection of 40 uncertified defects on PK-734 operated by A310 at Paris on 9 Aug 2011 and has termed CAA regulatory controls as “unreliable”. European Aviation Safety Agency has communicated to both PIA and CAA that final decision regarding placing of censures including ban is likely to be taken in March 2012 at the agency's next scheduled meeting.  In a letter dated Nov 11, 2011 the agency stated “As part of ongoing surveillance of Part 145 holders, European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has accredited DGAC France to perform routine inspections on PIA on behalf of EASA”. SAFA inspections have increased at London, Manchester and other airports, following increase in incidences involving PIA aircrafts with uncertified defects.

This agency has previously censured and imposed a partial ban on PIA fleet in 2007. The ban was restricted PIA's aged poorly maintained Boeing 747 and A310 fleet of PIA. PIA now operates relatively new Boeing 777 and for most of them airline is still paying installments.

For an airline which does not seem to have funds to keep its existing fleet flying , it makes no commercial sense that priority was to arrange finances for inducting 5 more B-777 at a tag of $1.5 billion with options for 5 more of the same.

Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Azeem Daultana had informed NA on 22 Nov 2011, that PIAC Board had approved a 3-year Business Plan 2011-14 for induction of 6 Boeing 737 short range aircrafts but instead they have gone for more expensive new aircrafts for an airline which plans to reduce its long routes such as Chicago, incurring daily losses of over Rs7 Crore. Transparency International has termed the deal a gross violation of PPRA rules and alleged massive kickbacks over pricing.

It is worth mentioning that prolonged delays of PIA flights and disruptions in flight schedules have become a routine matter. Agitated passengers are seen quarreling with PIA traffic staff who are unable to explain delays. These recurring mishandling of passengers is drastically damaging credibility of national airline with disastrous consequences on revenue generation and creating problems to pay installments on existing fleet of Boeing 777 and ATR.

A recent example was observed on last Thursday when PK 757 operated by Boeing 777 was supposed to depart from Lahore at 11.30 am. The aircraft arrived from Karachi operating PK 302 with a technical defect that had a waiver under Minimum Equipment List approved by CAA and Boeing. In this case, the specified period for rectification expired as parts were not available.

Another B-777 which returned from Manchester needed service first but instead it was deputed for PK-303 carrying a VIP who happened to be MD PIA. Over 300 passengers were made to sweat it out in the Departure Lounge after having been checked, despite the fact that aircraft was unserviceable and should never have departed from Karachi, which is main maintenance base and all aircrafts departing from there should be serviceable and not get grounded at first stopover.

 A student bound for London Noorjehan Khan (PNR FDHCIC) complained that there was chaos and even telephone facility was not available to contact her family, who were desperate after hearing news of delay on television.

The young lady was exhausted and frustrated that passengers had to endure agony to wait for over 8 hours and finally they were told at 7 pm that flight would depart next day.

A passenger who was to catch a connecting flight to USA was very agitated and said “this airline should be fixing its aircrafts instead of buying more”. After a lot of protests passengers were allowed to leave Departure Lounge having suffered an ordeal of being cramped in a congested space for over 8 hours. The flight was rescheduled to operate after delay of over 24 hours on 2 March and departed at 11.45 am.

When contacted PIA spokesman Syed Sultan Hassan and media advisor, Tahir Khaleeq both the officials did not attended their cell phones despite repeated efforts.

yes sabi you should cancel PIA because not safe to travel in these days, in PIA there are passengers but no Engines

If u can get the whole refund I would strongly recommend to do that, else just fly with it.
I am stuck with PIA for all my domestic traveling while coming back from Lahore last week it was a chaos
flight was 4 hours 15 mins delayed they merged passengers of 3 flights in 1 inside their beloved Boeing 777.
My seat was like i am sitting on a bench but luckily it was only 1 hour 45 mins.
Inside the plane it was free seating just find your seat and travel poor lonely females were trying to find a seat next to a female but it was very hard for them. They gave us 1 very cold sandwich which was so hard to chew and coffee was like i am drinking Joshanda
Next day I humbly requested our travel guy please can u not book us in PIA for domestic and he was like its not in his hand.

PIA International flights are way better than the local PIA flights especially Toronto-Karachi/Lahore/Islamabad flights.

Bro the flight with which they merged us was International flight coming from New York Via Lahore and those people were so pissed that I heard one uncle saying mere baap ki toba jo ainda main PIA se Travel Karoon
and some of the international passengers were so pissed they denied to get off the plane and wanted some senior PIA official to come inside the plane oh well I was in hurry and i was domestic so i left

I went to Pakistan 3 times in the last 3 years with PIA and i didn't encounter anything like you mentioned above   Although, I do realize that their service can not be compared to Emirates and Etihad and is below standards. Maybe I am lucky that I didn't have such an experience with them yet.

The reason canadian staff don't call in Pakistan is that if someone does not understand english then our Pakistani would be speaking urdu, but they also try try to speak english just like this person who finish high school in small village in Pakistan and everyone was so happy that now they have someone who can speak english so they put him to test and took him to hotel intercontinnental and told him to speak only english.Here is this villager's english,

oh just to add some more spice on international traveling from Toronto.
2 months ago my niece's husband flight was delayed for 22 hours and 1 day was gone waste out of 18 precious holidays.
Last year my niece was coming alone Toronto to Khi and on a tip of pissed of gf plane was landed in sweden without any intimation to passengers all of a sudden BOMB Scare. Swedish security escorted all the passengers to a stranded location. Plane was searched and they found it was a HOAX but all those passengers were treated like they are terrorists.
So then PIA decided the plane will go to Manchester after everything was cleared and they flew to Manchester and unexpectedly few more passengers were boarded on that plane. So finally after a day she landed safely in Karachi.
It was everywhere in the Media and I think still can be searched online. She was so pissed that she bought a ticket from Etihad on the way back.

Finally I am not stopping anyone from traveling in PIA, its not bad all the time, since I have long history with PIA so may be I have seen more bad incidence about it
Once it was one of the best airline but rumors has it they are destroying PIA bcuz Zardari's sister Faryal Talpur is launching her Airline by the name of Indus Air, so u guys can understand.
Still for people of Ontario its good option with cheap fares and direct flight.

My few family members traveled by the mid and end of Feb 2012 with Etihad but they said PIA is better than Etihad although Etihad has good service but small plane (must be Airbus 310) with congested seats and very long traveling 20 hrs from Toronto - LHR 

PIA international having (Boing 777) new and good plane with 13 hrs traveling time but domestic planes are still question.

But I want to tell u something which we suffered.my elder bro had booking via ONE AND ONLY Well known PIA Islamabad to Paris.it was a emotional see off (Pakistani way) lol but when we reached at airport there was no sigh of PIA flight.international flight was Cancelled without any information BUT my bro had an important appointment next day.when we went to ask them the reason first no one was interested to listen to us.but after loong struggle  the excuse they said is v interesting
THEY CANCELLED FLIGHT BCZ OF LESS BOOKING AND GAVE US DATE AFTER 2 DAYS to LAHORE BCZ FRM LAHORE UNFORTUNATLY One more PIA Plan was going next week.
Can u believe it?dawoo is much better than PIA.
But still it's long story how he went to lahore and flight landed ROME without any reason or schedule.when we called why flight still not reached PARIS they said we don't know u better call ROME and ask them when PIA will takeoff
