Does anyone know if my spouse, whom I plan to sponsor, has to change her last name to mine.  I am concerned with this because I have to send copies of her passport and ID card.  I know that under Canadian standards it is the average for her to change, but under laws in Thailand it is optional for her to take the guy's last name.  Does it really matter?  Anyone out there that knows what I should do???

Another thing... does anyone have the list of international DMP's?  I searched the CIC website and couldn't find anything!!

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Actually, in Canada the other last name options are becoming more popular, such as keeping the same last name, the man taking the womans name, and creating a hyphenated last name.  Canada equally recognizes all of these options just the same as the woman changing her last name to that of her husband.  I personally know many people with hyphenated last names, or who kept their maiden name, it is not uncommon.  I dont think you will have any issue with it, however just to be safe you may want to write a short letter explaining that your wife has kept her maiden name.
