Change of address

Can anyone tell me what are the consequences(if any) of not up updating your address. I still get my mail through redirection to a friend. I used to live in London but now reside in the US. I did send the visa office and e-mail to update my address in Sept. 06, which was acknowledged. However, they are still sending correspondence to my old address. What is the best way to do the update. Thanks.
