Well in Canada, the Charter of rights appllies to Canadians or None Canadians,Those laws would be struck down so quickly in Canada.Racism is severely punished in Canada. For example last year A white supremacist Mom was caught teaching her kids to hate none white people,The Goverment took away her kids and told her she will only get them back when she ceases to be a racist.Latest I heard she is desperately volunteering for Immigrant services societies to show she has changed.Just punish racists severely and they go away.We have a hate crime designation also,You get extra years in prison if your crime is racially motivated.Well no wonder .Well thats why i am a proud canadian

I agree Baloo,For example I live in Vancouver where Caucasians are a minority and the population is 35% Chinese,10% South Asian and 5% Filipino .A German visitor was telling me ,She could not understand why We allowed the ethnics to take over,I told her that We are ALL IMMIGRANTS to Canada, only the first nations can claim to be native residents otherwise We were all Canadian,They were new Canadians and I was old stock Canadian. She looked a me like I was crazy and said its a good thing Germany keeps the foriegners in their place

OK.....this will not make me popular..but to a degree, I agree with some of what the article talks about.
Firstly, the fraudulent marriages for immigration purposes really, really gets to me. The genuine couples suffer servilely, as do the Canadians whom are duped in this type of fraud. There needs to be change to this system and fast!!!
Secondly, parents who are sponsored to come over to Canada, whom are unwilling to learn English, unwilling to integrate but willing to take all the hand outs, really, really upset me. Once again, they cause genuine people suffering.
Canadian immigrants need to understand that immigration is a privilege. Given to those that truly want to be Canadian and contribute to this great nation.
So....the answer?...no idea but I think most of us realize that something has to change and soon.

It's an interesting article.
European countries have a different problem than Canadians probably appreciate, and maybe stricter rules governing immigrants is necessary to preserve their national identity. We in Canada don't like fraudulent “visa marriages”, and we don't want waves of the type of immigrant who becomes a large financial burden on Canadian taxpayers.
Multiply our concerns tenfold and you begin to understand what is facing European countries now. For example, illegal immigrants are pouring the border into Spain, and many take welfare. Spain's economy is on the ropes, and illegals draining the treasury of billions is a contributing factor.
For example, some small European countries are facing a serious challenge to their traditional culture – generated by militant Muslims who are becoming a larger and larger segments of the population, and who demand equal treatment in their new, adopted country: Muslim holidays, institutions that observe Shariah Law, etc.
There was a good discussion about Shariah Law about a year ago; the more adept can search for it.
I prefer the Australian approach, in which the Prime Miinister said that legal immigrants were free to enjoy the benefits of Australia that attracted them to the country in the first place, but if they then sought to change Australia, they were also free to excercize another Australian right – the right to leave.
Uh ... I`ve forgotten the question. :-)

Toby you raised some valid points,But Remember We have a different situation here,Our country has Chinese ,South Asians and Filipinos as the largest incoming groups. These people has intention of trying to change our culture but try to join the mainstream.Religeon wise, many Chinese and most Filipinos are Christian.Filipinos are credited with helping revive the Catholic Church in Canada.Illegal Immigrants cannot welfare or work permits and on the contrary Canadian Muslims are some of the most LIBERAL in the Moslem world. So We dont fear Muslims because a recent study shows that by the time they reach the 2nd generation the majority become LESS religous

The First Nations are immigrants too. They came over from Asia. Everybody in Canada has an ancestor from somewhere else if we go back far enough. Good points. Canadians have a reputation for being tolerant, and indeed most Canadians welcome the influence of other cultures. I am happy with this state, as long as this doesn't lead to the situation that exists in some European countries, where their core identity is under siege because hordes of immigrants are demanding that the new country adapt to them, rather than the reverse.

Come to that, Karlshammer, anyone living outside the original Mesopotamia (is that still considered the birthplace of mankind?) is an immigrant -- first generation to 1567th generation.
