Yes, u can link to networking groups! u can sign up and join Linkin networking groups. Sign up and join groups that u are interested and start to hook up with groups or associations that would help u.

The best is to link up and if u are graduates of US or Canadian unis or colleges, that would definitely be an advantage! Otherwise, join groups that are not college or uni related but job related.

Canada's hidden job market is so well hidden that I've lived here for years and I haven't even been able to find it.  Wink
A friend of mine is going through the process of coming to Canada but I'm really concerned for his long term job prospects. It seems like a lot of employers are cutting back these days.

Vicbowling - know what you mean it seems to be a well kept secret. You must find the key people in the community and network with them to gain access

I guess that's what I've been doing wrong. I've never been good at networking. I think a couple of people that I thought were friends were just networking with me. If you lose your job and you're in that situation you quickly discover that your networking friends can't be bothered with you because you no longer provide a link to potential employment that is better than their current level of employment. It's discouraging to have relationships like that.

As a professional Canadian Career Coach I can confirm that Networking is the number one method of finding employment, ranking about 80+% of all available positions.  Other options are recruiters/placement agencies and online/print ads, which only amount to approx 20% of positions.

Networking is cheaper for employers as there is no advertising, or recruiters fees and most importantly it will come with a personal referral.  Someone has recommended you for the job -- this is extremely valuable!    Many large companies have set up internally job-referral programs that give employees money for every person they refer that is successfully hired.  This saves companies thousands of dollars compared to recruiters fees, or print ads in major newspapers.

Join LinkedIn and other online professional sites.  Remember, networking takes time and patience.  People won't recommend you unless they think you're a strong candidate, as their reputation is also on the line from the referral.

Has anyone tried accessing companies websites and posting the resume on their careers section? is this helpful?
