From what I understand most of the best jobs exist via Canada's hidden job market - it's who you know rather than what you know. Seems networking is a good thing to try and do before landing, join groups online like LinkedIn etc and find people in your industry. Connect with them and start to exchange contact info etc, ask questions. This article explains some of the things to do http://www.muchmormagazine.com/2010/02/the-secret-to-job-hunting-in-canada-is-to-understand-that-the-real-job-market-is-hidden/

From the messages I have had networking seems the most productive way of getting a better paid job, as anyone else found this to be the case?

Interestingly self employment across Canada has risen substantially during the recent economic downturn so even Canadians are finding it difficult to find a decent job. See http://www.muchmormagazine.com/2010/03/self-employment-in-canada-rose-substantially-during-the-recent-economic-downturn/

For those looking for jobs or wishing to change jobs, u will be able to find jobs that are in shortages now and in the future in this link, so if u wish to change jobs to enter the canadian workforce, this could be a start.
