Canada Post is supposed to be going on strike in the last week of May. Pople thinking of sending application or documents to CIC should consider using UPS/Fedex/Purolator so there is no delay in delivery.

Those awaiting a letter could be in for an extended wait as CIC use Canada Post only.

Actually, they're "in a strike position" as of May 25 -- it means they can strike with a minimum amount of notice, not that they will.

That doesn't mean there will be a work stoppage.  CanadaPost managers and scabs will make sure mail gets delivered, though possibly slower than normal.

The CUPW needs to be put in their place... I hope CanadaPost stands firm and doesn't make it so the cost of mail delivery goes even higher than it already is.

Also, FWIW, the CUPW workers for CanadaPost have been legislated back to work in the past.  Given our non-Socialist government, I can see the Conservatives taking the same action.

yes, looks like the strike will go ahead next monday from midnight...
canada post employees are set to lose their sickness days accrued, any new employees will start on a much lower wage and the employees are losing a lot of their employment rights....

They might really be getting screwed, but the rest of the Canadian population will benefit significantly from the reduced price gouging.

Probably not, but they hopefully won't rise as quickly as they have been.

I'm curious as to why you call the "freedom workers" scabs, when you say you are against the union (CUPW) and any strike.
"Scab" is  a pejorative word.

Maybe I'm the only one who thinks this but I don't think $0.59 is much to pay for a letter going from BC to Newfoundland or that $1.75 is too much to send a letter to Europe, Asia or Africa.  When I consider the cost of gas or a plane ticket....  So where is the price gouging?

It's not the cost of delivery that irks some people, R -- it's that half the cost of a stamp goes to pay for storage until the postal worker gets around to actually delivering the letter.

All the same, it costs next to nothing to mail a letter and it takes about a week ( a little less) for me to get something from here (Calgary) to Toronto.  That's practically cross country.  A week is pretty good in my opinion.  When I was in Ohio I would write my aunt in California, roughly the same distance, and it took about the same amount of time.  And America has a lot more infrastructure, highways and such, and less harsh weather, so it seems like it would be easier to get a letter somewhere faster.  I have no complaints with the postal system in Canada and if the price of a stamp goes up ten cents, I'm okay with that if it means my postal carrier doesn't have to worry about paying their mortgage or feeding their kids.

We very dislike Canada post. Slowest service ever. In the USA we get letters from our state within 1 day of mailing out, and get mail on Saturdays as well. Canada Post does not work this fast. Like I had mentioned elsewhere, we spent almost $20 to pay for next day delivery of our mail to Mississauga. It had to travel a driving distance of 1 hr and 15 minutes. It took 4 business days. That is quite ridiculous.

Just my opinion on CP. Anyone is allowed to have their own.

my wifw works in canada post and i honestly think if you knew what her job was and how hard they all are working there you would have some respect for them.
i am beyond amazed at what they are expected to achieve,
not sure how much i am allowed to divulge
but she is single handedly loading and unloading all the trucks into and out of  her depot tonight!!!
she has many work related on-going injuries but never misses a day of work because of them
and some people have thousands of hours sick time they have accrued that is going to be wiped clean if these new cuts are brought into effect!
i do think we should all walk a mile in their shoes...

It's unfortunate that hard-workers get tarred with the same brush that tars the freeloaders, and the union bosses like jean-Claude Perot (sp of last name?) who launched so many strikes in the 1970's, at a time when Canada's economy was weak, just to get high salaries for postal workers.  Canadians had little choice but to give in because there were not the alternatives that exist today -- like couriers, and other delivery services.  So ... there is a bad "Post Office" taste that lingers.

ok heres a question, my hubby just got his visa, once he gets to canada and lands, how will he get his permanent residency card if theyre on strike?
