If your husband is a returning resident he should do the import/export as part of his goods when returning to Canada. Otherwise you can't import it duty free until you get your PR. Is the car completely paid for or do you still have a loan? With a loan, you will have to get the lenders permission to export it.

Ya my husband is a Canadian citizen and we bought our car from usa. So I don't know wherther he is considered to be returing candidate. He lived in canada for 5 years.

My car is fully paid off.


So does that mean my car has to be imported from USA to Canada?

Ok, yeah. Since he has been living outside of Canada for more than one year he can import goods duty free up to a value of $10,000. This publication will help you sort it all out.

He (or you) will have to export/import the vehicle. There are quite a few steps to the process. If you PM me, I will send you a description of my experience with the process. First check here to be sure the car IS importable to Canada. The website describes the steps but I found it a bit confusing.

I'm not sure how it works for married couples, my car was titled in my name. Is the title for the car in your name?? If so, it might be worth a call to the customs office where you plan to cross the border (I assume he or both of you will be returning before you have your PR) to ask about the requirements for whose name is on the title.

We will be crossing the border in a us vehicle and we have to go through the import process. There is a link on the cic website. I was told to clean car out and when Putting back tools etc make a list. Se IOs ask for this.  Read the website for the specifics on your vehicle . Also call them three days before and let them know you are importing vehicle and you can fax the information to save time.  Also check the thread on importing vehicles on here ... Some users have wrote many good comments

Just a note, because I was on the phone with RIV yesterday afternoon about importing my car. I have a 2006 Chevy, and when I called a local dealership in Canada about getting a recall clearance letter I was directed to GM Canada who then directed me to a private company that charges $270 for that information. I was absolutely pissed, and called RIV about this. They informed me that actually, I should wait to get this information, because the first thing RIV is going to do once I import my car is to do a Carfax check on it. If the car comes up in its Carfax check with no recall then they won't make me get a recall letter.

Just wanted to pass that along, because it's definitely NOT the information that they list on the RIV website.

Also, you can check if your car is in Carfax just by going to website and entering in the VIN. You can't see the report unless you pay (it's $35), but at least you'll know the info is there for them to find.

I posted this in the B'lo thread but will put it here too. The recall letter for Hyundai was free (though it should be free for all US manufacturers as it is a mandatory safety information report) when I called the US head office. Canadian manufacturers don't have access to that info (they are separate company, separate systems blah, blah) which is why they sent you to the private company. Fortunately, the person I spoke to at Hyundai Canada steered me to the US office.
Interesting to know the RIV will do a Carfax check on it now. They charging extra for that??

No, I was told that there was no fee incurred by me for them to do the Carfax check.
