Once the PR card is issued, can one change their name?

Actually, the papers would more likely go to Nova Scotia Wink

The PR cards are made in Sydney, Nova Scotia. And they don't take a couple of years, the current processing time is 129 days. So it takes a while, but not years.

Yes, you can change your name. I would advise it being done before though, might save you some hassle later on.

I'm also thinking of changing my name soon. All the documents that I sent for my PR app is in my maiden name. I haven't changed names in my driver's license, passport, etc. Do I just inform CIC that I changed my name? I phoned them some weeks ago and the guy I talked to said that I should change the name in my passport before I can change the name in my application....He doesn't seem to understand my point so I hang up.

Another thing, can I change my name in my SIN card as well? I'm a temporary worker that's how I got one and it will expire in January.

Hope you can enlighten me on this one.

it's an interesting question. I'd like to know about it too. what is actual name change procedure? if I am a foreign national, should I change my name in my foreign passport 1st? does it mean I need to return to the country of citizenship to do it?

When you are living in Canada you would apply for a name change here, and it should be legally recognized worldwide.

To get a new passport, you'd have to check with the consulate/embassy of your country in Canada. I'm sure there's a way to get one without returning to your home country. I'd also ask them about what you need to do regarding the name change - I'm thinking you legally change it in Canada, but will have to at least notify them of it if you'll want a new passport.

Doesn't Canada have the assumed name part as well? I was planning on assuming my last name when I got there instead of legally changing it. Again, what a complicated process! I don't want to keep my maiden name for life, that's for sure, I just don't know when to change it :-(

Sure, once you are married you can use your marriage certificate to change your last name on your official documents.
