My temporary work permit will expire soon and i am wondering what is the best option for me. I will NOT be working after the expiry date and only plan to stay in Canada for 1 month as a visitor, then i will be returning to Australia.

My concern is that I am planning a short vacation to the USA during that month and that I will not be allowed back into the country, even though i will have documentation showing i am leaving Canada.

Can anyone please give me their opinions on my best course of action? Should i leave the country on the date as specified on the work permit, then re-enter immediately (eg the next day) on my passport as a visitor? Should i take the vacation with the hope of getting back in for the remaining few weeks? Or should i apply for a status change to visitor?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Spend the $75 it will possibly save you a lot grief in the future.  Just keep a copy of your extension request.

Thanks for that.

Would that still allow me to take the quick vacation to the USA, or would you advise against it?

Yes, with the proof of submission of the extension, you have "implied status" which as visitor ends when you exit the country.  But having applied for an extension, when you re-enter, then you haven't previously overstayed your status.  Overstays are not good when applying to re-enter.
