If he applies for social assistance, you will be responsible for repaying it, as he is within the sponsorship period.  That is the first consequence.  The second consequence is that as you will be in default of his sponsorship, you will not be allowed to sign or co-sign any further undertakings for other relatives.

If you apply for social assistance for yourself and your son, you will not be required to re-pay what you receive in respect of you and the child.

If you guys absolutely have to resort to welfare, then YOU need to apply... Makes no financial sense to your family if your husband does it, not within 3 years after Nov 2011...

What more advice are you looking for?

She'll still have to repay it.  It will be a "family" benefit and since he's here, he's on it as well.

yea, MY advice is to NOT go on welfare, either way you will end up in default because your husband will be counted as a family member. Try to get a small job or something in the mean time. It will save you years of hassle. Good luck!

Actually - it has nothing to do with when someone becomes a citizen. The sponsor is responsible for the applicant for three years after landing because this is the agreement they signed when they submitted the sponsorship application.

Nothing will stop them from applying for welfare. But they will be responsible for paying it back.

No offense, but y dont ppl get a job, even a minimum wage job is better than welfare...Welfare money is nothing. I would rather wash dishes or babysit kids, before I go back to begging those ppl for some small change. Worse if I could make it as a single mom with 4 kids and no child support, no family to watch my kids for years, why would I have my husband come here now and between the 2 of us have to look for a welfare cheque??? No wayyyyyy! Better look a job.

While I agree people shouldn't be depending on welfare, there are times where it's needed. Look around the world and economy today. I'm a college graduate, recent one by the way (2009) And I'm only ON CALL. Which means once every once in a while. That's barely enough to support myself. Thankfully I have awesome family members to help out. But if I didn't have them (or my disability payment; which is beside the point) I wouldn't be on this laptop or anything. I'd be on the street, and possibly on welfare. Jobs are extremely hard to find, especially full time jobs to support a family.
Just saying..

As for OP, I would look at the pros and cons. You WILL have to pay it back, whether you apply or your husband does. Think 10 years from now, will you be able to pay it back?
