So we submitted my husband's PR application in early December and have been waiting since.  We ordered CAIPS notes last month and I see that the IO in Buffalo requested an RCMP name check back in late January.  There is nothing in the notes about the result of the name check ever being received.  What should we do?  It appears that this is holding up the application as everything else is in order.

I think that is done internally. CIC is doing their own personal check on the applicant and from what I have read in previous posts, this could take a few months to process.

What do you mean?  What is done internally?  If they requested a name check from the RCMP that would be done by the RCMP, no?  From what I've read this should only take a few DAYS, not months. All the other checks (documents, medicals, FBI) have been completed.

i think he's saying that it is an RCMP background check which CIC has requested (and proceeded with without your involvement, thus internally... they correspond directly with RCMP) and i agree, in the cases i've seen that have been sent to RCMP, it's added months on the processing time...

Doesn't that require fingerprints though?  They haven't requested any...

No its just a name check to see if the name and info (birthdate and such ) correspond, and the time it takes could yes very well be weeks to a month, dont stress to much on it.

4 months since the name check,is that what your seeing or how do you know they are still at that point as Ecas does not always update everything they do or even the same time they do it.Just because you seen before they were doing this they may be past that point and have moved on.

This isn't from ECAS.  Please read my initial post!  We ordered the CAIPS notes which provides detailed descriptions of all activities on the file.

We just got them today and they are dated May 14.  The RCMP name check request date is January.  It has been 4 months.

I saw another post from a person who had the same thing happen.  But in their case the immigration office requested another RCMP name check after they didn't get a response within a month to their first request (it is only supposed to take a week - if I go into an RCMP detachment in person I can get this check done on the spot).  Unfortunately our IO has failed to follow up in this way and there is no bring forward date on the file.

If they found something wrong they would have reported this back to the IO and it would appear on the file.  Usually in this case they would request fingerprints (which they haven't) to do the fingerprint-based check.

Is there someone else who is more familiar with this process who can comment on the best course of action?

Well it would never hurt to go to the RCMP and just tell them that your application is being held up because they have not answered a request from immigration and see if they can follow up on it for you maybe they will get it pushed through for you, what can it hurt,if you dont try thrn you did nothing right.
And likei said i have never seen it take this long maybe its going to an rcmp office that has a bunch of slackers lol.Do your own follow up go try.

The name check has been done, since CIC and Overseas offices have direct access to CPIC, it was done probably within a day of the request.  If they haven't requested prints then there was no "hit"
