I've seen that Vancouver (BC) is not a popular choice for practical reasons. It's harder to get work and the cost of living is high. Does this hold true until now?

hi heatspine, we plan to land in BC this coming March. Settle kami sa Surrey.

It is true that the cost of living in BC is higher than that of other cities, jobs are comparatively minimal too (based from online job postings, ads). My profession, engineer, doesnt have that much opportunities as compared to Toronto and Calgary.

But then again, will we when we land there this March. Btw, saang city kayo?

hi carlonoweast. we're looking at Delta or North Vancouver. i'm still scouting for a place to rent. yes, they say that the cost of living there is high as compared to the other provinces. i've been browsing for jobs (IT) and most of it are in the east coast. i'm still open for relocation - kaya i'm still thinking this over. how about you? engineering jobs i heard are best found in alberta. March na pala ang plan nyo for landing -- I do hope that our passports (with visa) are returned soon.

I did put my choice of city in IMM form as to be Vancouver but came across with some comments on not to choose the city for living initially as for practical reason.... It is indeed one of the top ranked livable city in the world but probably not wise to choose it for initial settlement without any good job offer... However, I will keep my eyes on this thread how fellow forum and landed mates do suggest about it to effect possible shift on my plan in future.... So pl count me in...

same here fariza. my primary reason for choosing BC is that I have relatives there and an initial support system can be obtained. so, i will be probably landing and see where work will take me. hopefully we'll have work there at BC and who knows we might stay there for good.

Fariza:  I don't know if you live in Sydney or that is just your VO, but I was there last year and it reminded me SO MUCH of Vancouver I couldn't believe it. SYD is just a little warmer and more vibrant, has sandier beaches.......
Nice to see this thread started and look forward to seeing more comments.

No Pippin I am not residing at Sydney but I 've been there for short stay and also for my interview!! Yes  Sydney has been quite vibrant compared to the place of Australia I live (Brisbane)... full of life but I am sure Vancouver  won't be that dense with full of busy heads and traffic crossing across the road like in Sydney!! Moreover, Sydney has been hugely multicultural with a range of choice for jobs (including odds...)...weather is very unpredictable....like London... Personally I like quieter city having lots of nature along with the technology and pace of life which Vancouver has lot to offer ..... but considering promise for effective settlement, job scope remains the top concern at Vancouver for most of the to be landed immigrant I am afraid.. ....

I agree. I'm starting to search for jobs and I noticed that most of the jobs are on the East (Toronto) and in Alberta. What's your 2nd option in case?

hi heatspine, i have thought of relocating in Toronto or Alberta. But i need to establish first in BC kahit blue collar so that it would be easy for me to transfer in the future. Also, same reason as yours, my brother-in-law lives there so we need to have someone to back us up just in case...

yeah, you may need to get a license since you are an engineer. have you attended the CIIP? try to do so. they will give you very useful links which will help in settling faster and prepare for work. for BC landers, its the Diversecity organization that coordinates this.
