Hi, I just needed your advice, from anyone who is familiar with brampton and/or cooksville area in Mississauga. I am looking to lease an apt (high rise) or town home. I have little kids under age of 5. Due to high rent we are moving out from current rental. We moved to Canada few months back that's why we are not familiar with the areas yet. The reason I choose the above areas is due to distance it will take us to get to work. My main concern is safety/crime rates? We are looking for rental approx $1000-$1200 with two bedrooms atleast. Plus we are not sure if we should hire an agent or approach rental units on our own?  Undecided Anyone who can give their 2 cents?

Thanx!

I cannot promptly comment on how safe Brampton/Cooksville would be for living as I never lived there. GTA is growing fast and so is crime rate. I can give you a hint: when the place offers comparatively cheaper rents, it has higher chance of being not the safest. In GTA, you would find Scarborough, Markham, Brampton cheaper to live and you can guess the rest.

FYI, agents wouldn't charge to you if you're looking for apartments to rent.

Here's a list of Macleans ranking of Canada's Most Dangerous Cities:

Good luck!

Thank you for your suggestion, ROSSEI. We will probably go with an agent.

I live in Mississauga (close to but NE of Cooksville) and find the area very safe. Our rent is $1300 (3br, 1ba) with utilities included. We rent a house in a nice quiet stable neighbourhood.

$1300 with utilities included, that's awesome!! Allison did you have an agent? Our agent has shown everything over our budget $1500+ Don't know why they do that.

I can recommend Caprent.

http://www.caprent.com/index.aspx

They have got good maintained towers with security round the clock. Try going to the map search area and do a search based on the parameters there. You will have to sign a lease of 1 year.

If you are looking for something non-lease based or month to month, try out craigslist and kijiji. They are also great places to look for apartments as lot of companies post move in specials there.

No we did not use an agent to find this place. I searched online (from the US) my partner called and visited the places. It took a while to find something acceptable in our budget, but eventually we did. This was 2009 and our rent has not increased even though our landlord sold the property last year.
