Those who are planning to drive from east coast to Calgary AB, avoid the northern route thru North Dakota but plan thru Salt Lake City Utah which is more promising.

NY-Chicago-Lincoln Nebraska - Salt Lake City UT - Idaho and then I-15 north thru Great Falls, Shelby and Calgary.

This route will save two Northern states and lots of mountain routes. It will avoid going thru North Dakota and South Dakota so after Chicago you will move to a lower level instead of being in North. With this route you don't have drive to Minneapolis but after Chicago you will drive thru Iowa. Average whether on this route around 2nd week of April will be 56 to 60 degrees which means all dry and no ice at all. All open plains and pretty much straight Interstates.
