Australian crossing the USA–Canada border to visit for five months

I want to travel in Canada and the USA over a six month period between September and January 2008-2009. Do I need a special visa to cross back and forth between the two countries?

Nope, you just need a machine readable passport to use the US visitor visa waiver program for a visit of up to 90 days.
