My huband is Canadian and I am from the US. We are just now sending in our immigration paperwork. I am going there in January and I know I can stay for 6 months legally. We are hoping that my PR is completed before then end of the 6 months. I am planning on flying to Seattle and he will come and get me and cross the border by car. Will they ask if I have a return airline ticket or anything? We have been married since March and seen each other once for 2 weeks in August and have been in a relationship for 4 years I am not worried about not getting the approval just how to handle staying with him until then ! Thank you in advance and good luck to all of you out there waiting like we are! Found the love of my life and I want to be with him !

Hello it is up to the CBSA whether they grant a stay of up to 6 mths as they can issue vistor record with shorter duration. I believe what others have done in the past is provide proof that application was filed and paid for and show they still have ties to the USA and make it known u will be visiting not living although u will be here for a good while.

I would encourage you to be completely honest when questioned on entry to Canada. Make sure you bring all your documentation about your application and funds that your spouse has to support you since you or you have yourself for health care etc. since you may not work in Canada without authorization until you are granted permanent residence. While you are in Canada, if allowed to enter, you would be considered a visitor and must not be otherwise inadmissible. It is generally the case that unless otherwise limited, a genuine visitor may remain in Canada for 6 months, but as noted, this duration may be altered shorter or longer and a visitor record may be issued. You may be lucky to have the decision on your permanent residence visa in a short time or may need to apply to extend your stay in Canada. Whatever the case, you need to be prepared for the possibility that you may need to leave Canada at the end of the time granted for your stay in Canada and seek to re-enter again - this may be for a permanent residency interview or for landing or another reason - maybe you need or want to go back to the US during the process or visit another country. Until you are granted permanent residence you have no right to enter Canada and need to meet entry requirements any time you seek to enter Canada.

I am prepared to come back in to the US if need be. I have been told I have a right to be a visitor for 6 months. I will have the funds to support myself while there and healthcare. I spoke with the international school where I will be living and was told because my husband is my daughters step-father she has a right to an education in Canada. They are telling me if I need to extend my stay waiting for the PR I should not have a problem. Just wondering what others has done in this situation.
