I have a PR app in process and am in Canada now on a visitor record good for about 10 more months. My close friend is getting married in May, and I am planning on going to her wedding in the US. I was hoping I would have PR well before then, but now I don't know if I will. If not, I know it is possible I could be denied re-entry to Canada when I try to return. I plan to take all my paperwork to show that I have an app in process, sponsorship approval, CSQ, etc. Maybe I will take the entire application? (Should I? That would be quite heavy in my baggage...)

So I am wondering...when trying to re-enter Canada (at the airport), do I have a better chance of getting back in if my husband and I are traveling together on the same flight and going through customs together?

A lot of people have been able to re enter when still on a visitor record. You will not need to bring the app but rather proof that it is in process such as receipts from the filing. Sometimes the IO will extend the visitor record just on this case or leave it as is with the original leave by date.
Really it is truly up to the IO that you talk to.

The opinions are you stand a better chance.
But you should note that the opinions from here don't count when you are in front of an IO.

As you know, there are no guarantees of entry in the situation you describe.

In many cases the visitor record usually specifies, no re-entry allowed. But if you are visa exempt then it is somewhat irrelevant.
Carry as much proof as you have, maybe on your laptop if you want to save space ?

My spouse has been here for 13 months on an extended one too from the USA an yesterday we crossed for the day at niagara falls to get American groceries we don't have up here. We were going to go for dinner after too but we were both so nervous about re entry we just came straight back. The officer asked to see his expired vr, proof that we submitted the new request back in December so we gave him the Canada post receipt showing we sent it to vegreville the same day we had our receipt for, and the pr fees and sponsorship approval. He waved us in and didn't give us a new vr though or didn't stamp his passport

I would have asked for a stamp, it is not required (don't worry).
Keep a note of the date as the six month clock has just been reset.

Your "so nervous" comment made me smile, my stomach would have overridden any worries, we would have stayed for a meal  Grin

Where did you go shopping, did you buy anything really good ??

Thank you everyone, for your feedback; I appreciate it. And carrying digital copies of documents of our application on a laptop is a very good idea....

Just a point to note, I carry the documents on a DVD/CD.
My Apple mac main drive is locked down when I travel.

Business documents are secured on the main drive (immigration don't get access there), but if I need to show the contents of the optical disk, I log into a different account.
Paranoid, no - just good business practice Smiley

Very good idea Baloo! When I crossed the last time they asked to see what was on my computer. I freaked and told them that was privacy infringement and they backed off but even though I have nothing to hide it is none of their business to read my emails and google talks!

The USA is far worse, they CAN take your laptop away from you if they want.
Many businesses are looking at no actual data being moved across borders on drives or laptops, because it is way too much risk to commercially sensitive data.

Is it still reset even though we sent in his visitor extension back in December? Which would we go by? They also didn't stamp the passport so we have no proof really other than banking records from te grocery store (but it's a joint account).
We bought garlic and parmesan cheese it's, beer, Buschs baked beans, southern sweet tea, yoplaits yummy yogurt flavors we don't have here, and of course a ton of code red mountain dew Smiley lol

Nice shopping list....

If he leaves Canada before he receives his new status, his "implied status" is void.
If he leaves Canada after receiving his extension, his "implied status" will normally be made void.

So his status will normally be for six months from the date he entered Canada (last visit) - unless the VO gave a new visitor record, or limited the stay in another way.

Mountain dew, waaaay too much sugar for me.

So when they process the extension request will they see he left and re entered and void it from their end? Or do we call and cancel it?
If he gets refused the extension do we ignore it since it's "void"?

You do not need to call.

I would be surprised if it was refused, but IMO, either way it is no longer relevant as you entered the country recently, restarting the six month "clock".

Unless they extend the status in question for more than 6 months, which might lead to 'void' extension lasting longer than the current reset. Or would they take into account the new last entry and extend from the date it expires?

Meh, you guys will have the whole PR done in the next 6 months anyway, who cares Cheesy
