Hi!

I would be really grateful for some advice! I am Canadian citizen and my husband is British. We met in November 2005, got married in September 2006 and had a baby daughter in September 2008. We live in England but intend to move to Canada sometimes next year. I had to applied for several Visas and Permenent Residency in order for me to stay in England and I can now finally apply for my British Citizenship. As we want to keep our options open, I was thinking of applying for it so that if we want to come back here in, let's say 10 years, it would not be too difficult. My question is: Can I apply to sponsor my husband to come to Canada while applying for British Citizenship? Are they going to know it and can it play against us?

Thanks for your replies!

Yes, you would retain your Canadian citizenship when you got your UK citizenship, so you can sponsor.

I think she wants to know if one or the other will hold it against her if she is applying for British citizenship and sponsoring her husband for Canadian PR at the same time.

I don't really know the answer.  I think it's unlikely that they will know but why take a chance.  Finish your citizenship and then sponsor your husband.

CIC couldn't care less how may citizenships the OP is applying for, as long as she is a Canadian.

but doesn't she have to prove that they are going back to Canada when her husband's PR is approved?  Would the citizenship application not indicate the contrary?

Hi,

yeah that's exactly what I am worried about...Thanks for your advice, I think I will wait to get my British Citizenship before starting the Sponsorship for my husband...Anyone knows how long is the actual waiting time at the moment?

According to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/05-fc-spouses.asp#europe it takes 2-7 months to approve a spouse for PR, average 3.  Add to that at the very beginning one month for the sponsorship applicaiton.

Thanks! Hopefully we're still going to be on target if everything goes according to plans! It should take about 4 months for my British Citizenship, then if we say at the most 7 months for my husband so that's May next year...

Thanks for your replies

And even if he gets it faster, you don't have to go right away.  He will have a year from the date of his medicals to "land" in Canada and even after he lands, he could still go back to the UK if you need to stay longer.

Thanks for all the infos. I am filling in the forms at the moment and was unsure to wether we have to put our baby as a dependant child or not? Technically, because I am Canadian she is a Canadian Citizen as well isn't she? So do we have to include her or not?

Your baby goes in the additional family information.  You can apply for a citizenship certificate for your baby.  Obviously in any part of the application when it asks do you have children you state yes and who you live with the baby would be listed.  You are just not sponsoring the child as she is a citizen.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for that Boncuk, I don't know why but I thought I had to sponsor her as well(must have misread the guide). I'll have to redo the forms but at least it's saving us an extra 75$.

You would be wise to get your children their canadian citizenship certificates as well this takes 6-12 months to receive the cards but you will be able to get them their canadian passports.  I'm not sure with the UK but I know I had to go through that where I am.
