applying forcanadian Permanent Resident card from US

Hi

I am an international student in on student visa, US, wish to apply for canadian Greencard/PR. i am doing masters degree in technology & management field. how much time does it take to apply for Green card from US...and not from my home country India?

do i need to wait for 1 yr...atleast to apply from US for canadian GC...
And under what catergory would best suit me....
