I asked this from CHC New Delhi that weather is it necessary to have surname in passport or not ...and thier reply was .

Dear Sir/Madam,

This is in response to your recent email enquiry to the Immigration Section of the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi.

CIC's visa office in New Delhi receives a high volume of permanent resident applications from people with the surnames Singh and Kaur.

Asking applicants to provide a surname in addition to Singh or Kaur has been an administrative practice used by our visa office in New Delhi as a way to improve service and reduce incidents of mistaken identity. It also ensures the safety and security of Canadians by facilitating security screening.

Providing an additional surname is voluntary and no permanent resident application will be rejected if the applicant chooses not to provide it.In the national interest, CIC and its security partners in the Government of Canada will, however, need to be satisfied that individuals are who they say they are, and that they meet the requirements for entering the country.

Applicants are therefore asked to provide all names which they have used or been known by to ensure that effective screening can be done.

However, the name on your PR Visa shall be in accordance with your passport details.
We trust that this information will be of assistance.
