Hi, I just wondering once I land as a permanent resident can I start working right the way or do I have to wait for my PR card or a new SIN (a friend of mine told me the SIN I got now from my work permit might be different from the one I get from PR).

O and also for the port of entry, would it be an issue if I drive to the US border (Im in Vancouver now), walk out and then walk back into Canada and get my status? I am a little bit concerned as i have NO valid US visa, and I probably do not want to leave any bad record on the US immigration side.

If indeed the US/Canada is not a good option, would Mexico work? (I dun need visa to travel to Mexico) or any other suggestions? Cheesy

Many thanks for help in advance!!

If you already had "work permit" nobody can stop you from starting to work right away. (my guess)

I do have the same question as pat_battle. Could anyone help to clarify this question please? Thanks.

After you get your PR, you need to go to Service Canada and apply for a new SIN.  Once you have your new SIN, you can start working.  You could start working before you get your new SIN but then the employer probably can't pay you Smiley

The SIN for a temporary worker starts with a 9 and is a temporary SIN.  Once you become a PR, you get a permanent SIN.

When I did it, I don't think I got it right away, I think I got it only when I got the card in the mail a week or two later.  I have heard some people say they got the new SIN right away so it may have been changed since then.

When you apply for SIN, you wont get the SIN Card right away, however, you do get a paper format that has your SIN number on it, which allows you to work right away. Smiley hope that helps, i did this when i got my open work permit, i asked service canada people if i could work right away with this piece of paper, they said "yes"
