ADVISE FOR IELTS APPLICANTS

Hello everyone,

I saw a lot of concern in these forums among people who are not very fluent in English. If any of you plan to give IELTS and/or need help regarding the same, please feel free to post and I will try my best to help out.

Hi MarkCan,

I wish your kind guidance for IELTS test appearing.  Presently my Eligibility Score for FSW is 55.  I need 12 more points i .e. option remains in IELTS only.  Please highlight some impartant technical strategyto score 12 points as I will be appearing in 2nd of November, 2009.

Hi Sunandan,

There are 4 parts to an IELTS test:

1. Speaking
2. Writing
3. Listening
4. Reading

In order to get 12 points in IELTS, you need to make sure you get at least 7 points in two parts and 2 points each in other two parts. Only you know best which two are your best best out of the 4. Prepare hard on those two parts of the test.

For example, say your Listening and Reading is very good. Here is how you need to score to get 12 points (at least).

1. Listening - 7.0 and above (4pts)
2. Reading - 7.0 and above (4pts)
3. Writing - Try to get at least 6 and above (2 pts)
4. Speaking - Try to get at least 6 and above (2pts)
TOTAL = 12

Dear Mark,
I think IELTS reqyirements have been changed.
To obtain 12 points you may score the following

1. Listening - 6.5 and above (4 pts)
2. Reading - 6.5 and above (4 pts)
3. Writing - Try to get at least 5.5 and above (2 pts)
4. Speaking - Try to get at least 6.5 and above (2pts)

yes this is correct except the case of speaking .For this we shpuld score only 6.5 to get a score of 4 points.

Prospective:

I would advise you to speak naturally (the way you do usually) in the test. If you are not habitual to speak in English either at work or home or outside, then it is best you practice speaking until it is time for you to give the test. The more you speak in English, the better you get at it.

That may be the case, but I think it is always safer to aim for at least 7 in order to get 4 points. As for 2 points, I would always advise someone to aim for at least 6.0. You may have a point though.

as per listening, try to watch one movie, read one magazine, have a favorite song.in short, have one favorite for evrything so you have something to tell ur rater.where you from?im from the philippines.though im not very sure if rater from your country gives the same type of topics from where im from, u may email me at char_bonel @ yahoo.com.i can send you latest topics of questions rater asks test takers gave from my home country.

From my experience:
0. Take some couching courses for IELTS (nothing else, not Business English, no nothing, only IELTS)
1. Take IELTS mock test - it will show you your weak points.
2. Take some couching courses for IELTS (nothing else, not Business English, no nothing, only IELTS) focusing on your weak points.

In some countries couching courses for IELTS are done in local language, not English. In my personal opinion in that case you are better off doing it yourself.

Preparation for IELTS DIY:

For Listening - LISTEN to BBC radio, audio-books (with British English) avoid watching movies. You need LISTENING, not WATCHING. (I got - 8, missed one of the parts)

For Reading - read, read and read. Anything you find. For True/False/Not Gven questions (many find them most difficult) - change question into negative, if it matches then your answer is  No, If doesn't match anything then - Not Given. (I got - 9, I like reading)

For Writing - read, read and read books on IELTS Writing. It is not exactly the same as everyday or any other writing. And then write, write and write with your HAND. Typing is not the same as handwriting. (I got - 6, because I wrote using simple vocabulary and did not mention opposite  point of view)

For Speaking - practice making a speech about a subject, to gain confidence. Do it with a native speaker and watch their reaction. Brush up your accent in a way people do not have a problem understanding you. (I got - 7.5, I am still not sure why not

The day before the test - go to bed well early, to make sure you slept enough to have fresh brains. This is very important. As important as your whole preparation process for the test.
