A Job in Canada

Hi,

 As a new comer, it seems that some sort of canadian experience is necessary. But what type of experience is necessary, I dont know. Imagine if as a skilled worker I work in Tim Hortons or such, isnt that maybe a sort of embarrasment when you write that in your resume and you are a skilled worker?


 Also, if anybody knows a good job interview preparation and resume preparation in Montreal, Let me know.

There is no embarrasment in any job that u take in Canada, nobody cares if u are a janitor or a waitress, a job is a job and u get Canadian experience even if u are janitor! I have worked as a parking attendant before and I have a banking job now, making decent, good money, so do u think that is an embarrasment in your resume? If u have any kind of Canadian experience, even though as a janitor or a waiter or waitress u still have some experience! Wake up to reality in life, dont think that u are a graduate and u cannot take a waitressing job! I have double masters and a double majors bachelors from a top US university and i also work as a parking attendant directing traffic! So what if u are highly educated, it means nothing too if u cant find a job without the proper Canadian experience, so wake up and be humble instead of being an arrogant xxxxxxxx.

Think of it this way while working in Tim Hortons, you are gaining Customer Service skills, time management skills, multitasking skills, all these skills will help you adapt better to the Canadian market. So all jobs here contribute to your overall experience towards achieving your goals.

 @  amritsehaj, 2 steps to it, first you have to apply as a landed immigrant, provided you have enough points you can come here and either look for a driving job, dishwasher job, delivery job etc the market is open for you. If not then you can apply to Iraq as a driver I know many private firms that are looking for drivers down there.

That decision should be done by each individual separately whether you want to start right at the bottom or focus your time on the right application strategy. I agree that money does not stink. However, I personally find it wasted time to work at entry level jobs with TH or MacD for someone with a academic degree and several years work experience. Most people I know found a job in their fields after some time (3-12 months) - even so it means a pay cut or some down grading in most cases. But assuming that every type of job counts as 'canadian experience' is in my opinion misleading...

Does the Canadian Govenment see oversees education as equal to Canadians? My finace has a Ba in Marketing and all his books in his University were from the US, Do you think he will have a hard time finding work here or will he need to take courses here in Canada first?

Good discussion. 

Please, do not be embarassed to get a job that is low level.  But at the same time, you should be strategic with what you are getting yourself into.  For example, if you have a degree in business, you are quite flexible, e.g. you can work at McDonalds, Tim Hortons, as you can get management experience at some point in this field and then move to another company were you can identify that you have supervisory or management experience.  If you are a nurse, doctor, physiotherapist, then you can get a job as a health care aide doing personal care, with this later it may help you in your future directions, if you are a teacher or midwife or social worker, then try to get a job as a babysitter.  If you are an engineer, you can work in a factory.

Dont feel embarassed starting low as this is always the case.  But I think the best thing is to get any job you can that is as closely related to your field as possible.  With this, try to volunteer in a related job that you want, and also upgrade ur skills, with certificate courses, diploma program and masters program.  If you have a bachelors degree, I do not suggest doing another bachelors degree in Canada.  Recent research is suggesting that the most successful immigrants are those who educate themself on shorter courses - 1-2 year courses. 

With respect to KSCM question, the Canadian government ministry of immigration sees oversees education as equivalent to Canadian, that is why you are allowed to migrate to Canada with the qualification.  The problem is that they are the only ones that see it this way.  Hence, while you will be able to migrate with your oversees qualification, employers and regulatory bodies will discriminate against you because you have oversees education. This is still the case if you had all canadian textbook, had canaian teachers (unless they help u to network to get a job),  Moreover, the phrase, "Canadian Experience" drives immigrants crazy in Canada.  Almost all employers (if not all) want Canadian experience.  Like my husband said after arriving in Canada, having a bachelors degree from another country without experience in Canada is like equivalent to being a high school student
