I plan to settle in Edmonton or Calgary. Therefore, i will be applying for registration in Alberta. Here is the link for nursing registration in Alberta www.cna-nurses.ca. Alberta is the third best option in Canada after Ontario and British Columbia.

hi there, finally i found a thread that i have been looking for. I am also an RN here in Pinas. I recently received my visa and i'm planning to land next year just before my visa expires. I have a few questions.
1. they say that Alberta's assessment is more tedious than that of manitoba and saskatchewan, is this true? anybody who tried to process their CRNA?
2. I am a nurse instructor, does this qualify as a RN experience?
3. How long is the average assessment time for Alberta, Manitoba, BC, Ontario?
Thanks so much for all your help.

Hello everyone!
I wish to share my experience in my hopes of becoming an RN in Canada:
In March of 2009 - I applied for eligibility in Ontario (CNO). Im a second courser with a degree in Respiratory Therapy and Nursing but NO NURSING EXPERIENCE.
June 2009 - They sent my assessment or letter of option to withdraw and received a letter of direction OR to do the bridging program. I wrote to my assessor and I told her I'm already studying Master of arts in Nursing and I shall provide CNO with additional transcripts as soon as I finished graduate school units until March 2010.
August 2009 - I applied for NS eligibility. Registration said I need to send employers verification and IELTS result. I emailed and said I have no nursing experience yet and I have to take my IELTS exams.
October 8, 2009 - I took the ielts exams...waiting for the results until the 21st of Oct.
So My difference from you guys is I have no nursing experience yet but I'm still persistent to achieve the Canadian dream...
So don't loose hope RNs.. Also I have TRV valid for 2 years so.. hope to be in Canada for the next CRNE..Good luck to each and every one..Waiting for my eligibility

I have a question? How can you get certified as a Alberta/other provinces nurse RN/LPN if you take the course get your diploma but didnt take the NCLEX exam.? Can you apply without doing the NCLEX , since some province requireyou to take their exam. I know Alberta Accepts NCLEX and no need to do it over but what about the others.

You do not need NCLEX for Canada; that is only for the US. What you need is CRNE if you want to practice as an RN in Canada. Everyone has to take the CRNE before they can practice; nursing is a regulated profession so there is no exception.

Would someone be able to take the CRNE exam with just the diploma and not NCLEX result? Where in the US do u take that exam (CRNE)? or do u have to take it in Canada Also Alberta do take NCLEX results for LPNs

You also will not be able to take it with just the diploma. You need to have a BSN degree to qualify to take the CRNE. It is only offered in Canada and not available elsewhere.

Are u saying that a 2yr diploma in nursing is not qualified in canada? it has to be bsn? Yes. Only those with BSN can become a nurse in Canada. what about LPN? can u be eligile with a lpn diploma? to become an RN? NO. how do u take the test in canada if u wont be able to go there til fsw is approved? wat is the real process? get certified there first then apply? if yes how do u go to canada and take the test if u dont have visa etc yet ?
If your FSW is not approved yet and you do not have a tourist visa then there is no way for you to get the exam. In my opinion, I think it is better if you wait for the approval of your visa first before you apply for registration with the nursing council as your eligibility to take the exam has an expiry. But if you have an existing tourist visa, you can apply for FSW and registration with the Nursing Council at the same time.

Yes, Wait for the approval of your visa
If the province you are planning to settle allows you to register before landing Canada, then it is best to be registered and prepare for the exams before landing. The advantage is as soon as you have the registration, they will allow you to work for 6 months ( I am referring to the province of Manitoba, this may not be possible in other provinces), provided before 6 months you have to pass the exam. Registration takes 2-3 months to process. And it is very expensive to stay in Canada without a job because you are not yet registered. Why spend 2-3 months in Canada without the job just going thru the registration process while this can be started while you are still in your home country? And you have all the luxury in your home country to secure all the needed documents they might ask for registration. But timing is crucial. You must start the registration application process 2-3 months before the finalization of your immigration application. Because once they give you the eligibility, they will only give you one year to sit for exams, otherwise eligiblity is nulled. As far as I know, and please correct me if I am wrong, in Ontario and in BC, you need to be a landed immigrant to apply for registration. But in Manitoba, they will register you even before coming to Canada as long as you will give them all the needed requirements. One thing is common among all the provinces, CRNE, LPN exams has to be taken in Canada. There is no way to take it outside of Canada.
