yup, yup..and its so sad news.all my efforts for CGFNS/NCLEX were all put to waste.lucky you! u need not to undergo SEC. i heard from friends that some may undrgo SEC anothers dont. i hpe ill be as lucky as you. from which country are u?im from Philippines, and some say that endorsement of license in canada maybe done after 2 years after initial license, not like in the US.did they grant you temporary permit after passing initial assessment?
thanks....

Hi char_bonel,power

Your discussion help me to get some good information..

I am also hoping that after my evaluation they won't ask me to go for SEC/exam.. Yes, I am also waiting for same answer from Power about temporary permit asked by char_bonel..

Power - pls let us know..

Actually I have also 6+ yrs of experience as a RN. out of which have already did my credential evaluation in US through CGFNS and worked in US as a RN for 2+ yrs.. still CNO(college of nursing in ontario) ppl deny to accept that credential assessment.. they want to do their own.. anyways, every org has their own policy .. we have to pass it through..

RN here too. Have applied for registration with CNO. Aside from the normal assessment that they do they also asked me and my friend to complete a competency equivalency form ( 7 long essays) to know if we have the competencies needed for a foreign applicant to begin their practice in Ontario.

We'll hear from them for the deliberation end of September.

I don't think Ontario has SEC. Only the other provinces has that. It's either they approve you to sit for CRNE after their assessment or they'll ask you to enroll in a bridging program. For how long is the bridging program? Depends on which school you will enroll and if you will do it part time or full time.

for me, ive been working as nurse educator for 4 years now and have only worked as staff nurse for 2 years before my present job.a close friend whos working in BC said that SEC examination is kinda difficult( so i think we all have to prepare for it) but if we dont make it, we can actually sit for LPN licensure.its another option for other RNs actually.

for CarribRN,
pls eloborate topic about bridging program?would thatmean we have to enroll in one ontario college and study again? are we allowed to do nursing jobs while on bridging program?

Yes. We need to study again for the bridging program... but that is only if the CNO decides that your curriculum is not matched with theirs.  We cannot work as an RN while doing the bridging program, however, you can opt to register as an LPN so that you can work (as an LPN) while doing your bridging course to become an RN.

Char_bonel/carribRN

When I did my credential evaluation in US through CGFNS.. they didn't asked me to do anything apart from passing NCLEX RN exam which was anyways must.

So can we expect CNO's reply also would be in similar direction ?

What are you thoughts ?

in my homecountry, Philippines, our curriculum is US based. did not had credentials evaluation with CGFNS because i took the exam which i just need to pass before taking NCLEX.In Canada however, the evaluation of credentials is based on actual nursing practice, that if we dont have enough hands on practice, they would require us for SEC or in some others the bridging program. I think Canada nursing is much much complicated with that of US.

mdarji:

Disregard your US RN license and the process on how you got it when applying for a Canadian license; these are two completely different things. Canada has its own pathway for nursing licensure.

Char_bonel:

Credential Evaluation is a mandatory requirement of some States in the US regardless of where you came from, examples are New Mexico and New York.

Hi everyone,

My husband is main applicant under FSW. We send our passports for PR VISA to CHC, London 2 weeks ago and expecting to receive VISA within 2 more weeks.  We are expecting to land to Canada early part 2010.

I am Staff Nurse working here in Saudi Arabia since 2000. I have 3 years Indian experience also. However, I am not a registered Nurse; I had 3 years Diploma in Basic Nursing and Midwifery from one of famous Medical Institution & Hospital from Kerala, India. I have Saudi Nurse-Health Credential certification. It is not essential to be a RN to attend Saudi Health Credential Exam.

Now, There are many doubts in my mind; I need your valuable advice.

1.   Is it necessary to be a RN to get RN license in Canada?
2.   My Diploma, 13 years staff nurse experience and BCLS will be enough to impress licensing colleges to get register for LPN or RN exams?
3.   At least licensing college can consider me to go for SEC or bridging program?
4.   will I be under LPN or RN with the credentials I have?
5.   Which province will be best for me?

You need to have a BSN degree to be able to practice as an RN in Canada. Before ,they allow diploma holders from other countries to register as an RN but all that changed in 2005. They introduced a new rule that requires all applicants for RN registration to be a graduate of BSN degree.

Probably you can register as an LPN.

I agree with CarribRN and i think package for licensure application to any teritory in Canada includes a verification of license held in original place of graduation and some other states/territory of licensure. So I guess one need to be an RN before bcoming an RN in Canada. But a friend in Canada said that if the curriculum in Nursing school you had does not match Canada's curriculum, they may allow you to sit for LPN licensure..

Thank you very much char_bonel & CarribRN,

Now I have an idea. But, still I need to know regarding SEC or bridging program. Is anyone of these or both programs required to get LPN license?

not very sure...

maybe other members can give better answer..

a friend in canada who is a nurse said that evry nurse who wanted to work in canada need to have SEC or in some others the bridging program that includes internationally educated RN's and LPN's.if u cant make it for SEC as a nurse, you have a choice to immediately apply for LPN licensure.SEC assessment though is free, not sure for bridging program.

Hi char_bonel/carribRN..

finally I have received assessment package from CNO - college of nursing in Ontario.. they included hell lot of details in the package with forms to apply.. they have also mentioned along with the package in supporting documents I will need to submit canadian PR or citizenship proof.. so I think will have to wait till the I get through the PR process.
