Hello everyone,

I am facing a dilemma.  My wife has one month left of her Temporary Resident Visa and I want to sponsor her (inland).  We just started the application, however, and still need to get things like the Police Certificate and do the Medical Exam.  I was hoping to include the extension to the TRV along with the sponsorship application, but it looks like I might have to request an extension before I can send the sponsorship application in.

In this case, what reasons can I use for the TRV extension?  "In the process of submitting the PR application?"  This is the truth, but how likely will they grant an extension based on this statement without proof?  What proof can I use?  Attach a half-finished sponsorship application?

The other alternative would be to try and finish the sponsorship application as soon as possible, but it's risky with just a month left of the visa expiring and I don't want to rush things.  Any thoughts or suggestions on what would be the best way to proceed?  My fear is that they might not grant a visa extension unless we have better reasons than a PR application in the works.  What about we just got married (last month!) and want to spend more time together.  Should I even mention the PR application?

Any suggestions welcome!  Thanks!

Why are you looking at an inland application?

Why are you looking at an inland application?
Good question - we are still deciding this.  Originally we chose inland over outland because:

  • We could apply even if legal status is somehow lost
  • We don't want to travel to her home country just for an interview
  • We'd like her to receive an open work permit
  • We'd like to get a CareCard/MSP as soon as possible

But seeing how long some applications take, it might faster to get to work and MSP by going with inland.  Our main concern is that we don't want to be separated and stay in Canada, maintaining legal status.  Are the chances of a TRV extension being granted any higher with inland vs. outland applications?

Thanks!

This can be avoided with planning.

  • We don't want to travel to her home country just for an interview
Honestly, interviews are rare. What country are you talking about?

  • We'd like her to receive an open work permit
Depending on the country, the outland processing may be faster.

  • We'd like to get a CareCard/MSP as soon as possible

You can always extend her insurance, I assume you have insurance for her visit?

But seeing how long some applications take, it might faster to get to work and MSP by going with inland.

It depends on the visa office.

IMO Same chance.

Mexico in this case, and going to Mexico City wouldn't be so desirable.

The outland processing time for Mexico is listed at 14 months... so in total it would be 16 vs 19 months. Worth the difference?

Thanks for the reply by the way!
