I was in the impression that it is last 5 years in Canada, does not matter if i were PR or not.

You're confusing the PR rule with the citizenship rule. For citizenship, you can use the year before you became a PR towards your citizenship residency requirement (each day spent in Canada before you became a PR counts as half a day toward your citizenship residency requirement).
For PR you can only count the days since you landed and became an actual permanent resident.
