Hi,

Because of some answers I am confused. I think your question is about declaring funds exceeding $ 10,000/- while landing.  If so:

According to:
CANADA BOARDER SERVICE AGENCY MEMORANDUM D19-14-1

Minimum Value of Currency or Monetary Instruments

Section    2. (1) For the purposes of reporting the importation or exportation of currency or monetary instruments of a certain value   under subsection 12(1) of the Act, the prescribed amount is $10,000

Who will report:

A person leaving or entering Canada with currency or monitory instruments subject to the reporting requirement, on them or as part of their luggage are responsible to report.

If you have funds exceeding CAD 10,000/-, as a principal applicant you can declare on behalf of others accompanying. Tell the CBSA officer that you have so much amount with you. The officer will give you the form, if a declaration is required,  considering the total persons travelling together. However, there is no tax for the amount what you carry. Therefore no problem for declaring and it is safe to do so.

Why do u bother?
-What way this declaration will affect u?
-In any case, everyone of us would be carrying over $10K.
-It's for a family unit, not per pp.
-It's to check against money laundering - a global requirement, not specific to Canada.
-U r coming here as a PR, not under dubious circumstances... u r genuinely safe.
-This declaration has nothing to do with ur taxes/duties, CCTB, welfare/EI [if any] etc.

So why bother?

Golden Rule: "Declare ur funds, come what may, how many ever pax u r, while landing".

Bank account in Canada can be opened by a landed immigrant only after getting the SIN. Health card is not necessary for bank accounts. But a bank statement in your address will be considered as address proof for health card issuance.

thnx wilson...

but these guys are opening my canadian bank account in india by using pr visa and copr..
they were saying they will be charging only when u get remintance done in this account ..means if i deposit Rs 10 lakh INR , i will be charged   Rs 2000/ for that..i will get a credit card and a debit card..

i will go to ON so next step will be when i land there as she was not knowing the ahead rules for the account in canada..

two questions
1) is it a trap to get more revenue and later on i m even charged for closing my account when i get better options available in banking thr
2) is thr any charge of using a debit card of scotia bank thrrough a RBS or any other bank ATM in ca?

Hi manunidhi21,

Well, people may have  different opinions in this matter. Those banks who open the account in India for a Canadian or foreign visa holder is only to secure their business and not for helping you.

It is my personal advice that you may take TC for major portion  and remaining as cash for immediate needs. Next day of landing  you could go for  the SIN. Open an account at any bank (Scotiabank, PC Finance, RBC,CIBC )  which has 'no fee checking accounts', 'No fee VISA cards,  convenient for you and deposit the amount you wish to. You may even open in two different banks according to your preference.

Opening account in India and then transferring the money to their Canadian branch, showing the statement prints as POF at  POE are also done by some people, but most of the people do choose to take DD or TC and cash.

You may do what you feel appropriate.
